As I began the process of finding interviewees, I was feeling very optimistic. I had already found a Professor of Apiculture to interview, but in the process of some pre-interview phone calls, something quite damaging to my documentary outline came to light: the bees are not in decline.

That's right - Professor Ratnieks told me that there are more honey bees on Earth than there have ever been before, and they are one of over 20,000 different species worldwide.

This left me in a rather difficult spot story-wise - how on Earth was I going to use this new information in a documentary which was based on completely different information?

Thankfully, after discussion with my advisor, we decided that I would begin the documentary with a doom and gloom scenario, but would explain within the story that perhaps the state of the UK's bee population is a little dramatised.
